Most historians think that Osburh was the mother of all Æthelwulf's children, but some suggest that the older ones were born to an unrecorded first wife. Osburh was descended from the rulers of the Isle of Wight.

The Mercian king Burgred called upon Wessex for assistance. King Aethelred I and the future King Alfred (Alfred the Great) soon arrived to besiege Nottingham, and the Danes withdrew to York without a fight.

Ivar didn’t keep this agreement and the Danes continued their invasion. In 869, the Danes defeated and killed King Edmund of East Anglia and conquered East Anglia.
