Barbara Stanwyck was born Ruby Stevens in Brooklyn, New York. She was the fifth child of Catherine McGee Stevens and Byron Stevens of Massachusetts. Barbara was four when her mother died after an accident. Byron left home two weeks after the funeral, and Ruby was cared for by her sister, fourteen-year-old Mildred or Millie as she was known.

The young Canadian of Scotch-Irish descent, nicknamed “Kitty,” was visiting her aunt in the area when Byron fell for her. The duo married in 1886 and established themselves in Lanesville, MA. Her mother, Catherine Ann McPhee Stevens, Kitty, died in 1911, when Ruby was four years old. Following Kitty’s death, Ruby’s father, Byron E. Stevens, a mason, left his five children and set sail for the Panama Canal, determined to get away and hoping to find work at higher wages than at home.
