She was also a talkative, tall-tale-telling alcoholic in the right place at the right time to make herself a legend. In spring 1877, Calamity Jane was out riding a trail and happened upon a runaway stagecoach from Wyoming that had been attacked by a Cheyenne war party.

For example, in the series, she is literate and claims to have grown up in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and Atlanta, Georgia while the real Martha Jane Canary was illiterate and raised in Missouri .
