The Virtual International Authority File ( VIAF) is an international authority file. It is a joint project of several national libraries and operated by the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). [1] History [ edit] Discussion about having a common international authority started in the late 1990s.
The VIAF® (Virtual International Authority File) combines multiple name authority files into a single OCLC-hosted name authority service. The goal of the service is to lower the cost and increase the utility of library authority files by matching and linking widely-used authority files and making that information available on the Web.
VIAFis a composite of several existing authority control databases, and so includes all the content from many of the other systems. Any entity with, for example, a LCCN should have a corresponding VIAF number as well, but not every entity with a VIAF number will have an LCCN.
