W Polsce Ludowej Bydgoszcz stała się również ośrodkiem naukowym (cztery powojenne publiczne uczelnie wyższe). We wrześniu 1951 roku powołano Wieczorową Szkołę Inżynierską, która po licznych przekształceniach staje się w 1974 roku Akademią Techniczno-Rolniczą z prawem prowadzenia studiów doktoranckich.
