Its 853,000 inhabitants in 1875 were 2% of the Empire's total population. This small size alone pushed the grand duchy into insignificance.

She was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
