Carolus-Duran es muy conocido como pintor de retratos, maestro de algunos de los artistas más brillantes de la siguiente generación, como es el caso del español Ramón Casas. Su pintura Virgen con el guante (1869), un retrato de su esposa, fue comprado por el Musée du Luxembourg en París.

Inició sus estudios de arte en su ciudad natal y los continuó en París, donde tuvo oportunidad de conocer la obra de los pintores realistas, especialmente la de Gustave Courbet .
Charles-Emile-Auguste Durand. (Lille, 1837-París, 1917). Pintor francés. Hijo de un posadero, se formó en Lille con François Souchon, un discípulo de David. Establecido por primera vez en París en 1853, hizo copias en el Louvre y conoció a través de Astruc, antiguo amigo, a Courbet.
