Wanderer above the Sea of Fog is a painting by German Romanticist artist Caspar David Friedrich made in 1818. It depicts a man standing upon a rocky precipice with his back to the viewer; he is gazing out on a landscape covered in a thick sea of fog through which other ridges, trees, and mountains pierce, which stretches out into the distance indefinitely.

He settled in Dresden, and associated with its circle of Romantic scholars and poets. He often visited his homeland and toured Germany.

Before he took up painting in 1807, Caspar David Friedrich had already created some of the most fascinating landscape drawings of his time. This exceptionally large sheet from about 1805-6 is based on sketches made on the island of Rügen, in the Baltic Sea, not far from the artist’s birthplace.
