Cecil B. DeMille was born on August 12, 1881, in Ashfield, Massachusetts. His father, Henry de Mille, was born in Washington, North Carolina, of Dutch and English ancestry. Henry was an Episcopal lay minister and a successful playwright. DeMille’s mother was born Beatrice Samuels to German-Jewish parents in London but was raised in New York.
