Central Visual and Performing Arts High School (formerly Central High School) is a magnet high school in St. Louis, Missouri, part of the St. Louis Public Schools. Founded in 1853, Central High School is the oldest public high school west of the Mississippi River, although it has moved several times and merged with a magnet school in 1984.
Central Visual and Performing Arts High School is focused on synergistically developing both the artistic and academic student. The Southwest Complex, located at Arsenal and Kingshighway, is near many cultural and civic venues including Shaw's Botanical Garden and Forest Park.
On October 24, 2022, a mass shooting occurred at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in the Southwest Garden section of St. Louis, Missouri, United States when a 19-year-old former student open fired on students and staff killing two and injuring seven before being fatally shot by police.
