Charles Allston Collins ( London 25 January 1828 – 9 April 1873) was a British painter, writer, and illustrator associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . Life and work. Early years. Collins was born in Hampstead, north London, the son of landscape and genre painter William Collins. His older brother was the novelist Wilkie Collins.

Charles Allston Collins was an artist and writer associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement in England. His younger brother was the novelist Wilkie Collins, a close friend and colleague of Dickens. Charles Collins married Dickens's daughter Kate in 1860, despite Dickens's objections based on their difference in age and Collins's poor health.

The painting is executed in the minutely detailed style of the early Pre-Raphaelites, though Collins was never a member of the Brotherhood.
