Curtis was born in Kansas Territory in 1860, a year before it became a state. Through his mother, Ellen Papin, he was an enrolled member of the Kaw Tribe. He was three-eighths Native American— Kaw, Osage, and Potawatomi— and five-eighths European, mostly French, Welch and Scottish. Curtis grew up on the Kaw reservation in north Topeka.

Charles Curtis, född 25 januari 1860 i Topeka i Kansasterritoriet, död 8 februari 1936 i Washington, D.C., var en amerikansk advokat och republikansk politiker som var USA:s vicepresident åren 1929–1933.
