Abstract. Up to the end of the 1780s, the prominence of Charles Fox in England owed as much to his position in society as to politics. He was a leading figure at Brooks's and Newmarket as well as Westminster. Fox enjoyed and encouraged friendships more than most men. Foxite politics was often an extension of friendship.
