Charles Mangin. Charles Mangin was born in 1866. During the early stages of the First World War he emerged as the most aggressive French general on the Western Front.His belief in offensive tactics resulted in his being given the nickname the Butcher.
Charles Marie Emmanuel Mangin (shärl märē´ ĕmänüĕl´ mäNzhăN´), 1866–1925, French general. A graduate of Saint-Cyr, he served in the Sudan under Jean Marchand and in French North Africa. His works on French colonial activities show concern with colonial development and supply a useful exposition of French colonial policy.
