Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend, KG PC FRS (/ ˈ t aʊ n z ən d /; 18 April 1674 – 21 June 1738) was an English Whig statesman. He served for a decade as Secretary of State for the Northern Department from 1714 to 1717 and again from 1721 to 1730.
Charles Townshend was the head of the treasury in Great Britain. He wanted to see Britain take more control over its colonies. After the Stamp Act protests, many including the British Prime Minister, William Pitt, did not want to pass more tax laws. Townshend, however, felt differently.
In 1767, Charles Townshend, Britain’s chancellor of the exchequer, imposed a series of new taxes designed to raise revenue. All imports of glass, lead, paint, and tea were to be taxed, new customs officials were to be sent to the colonies to collect, and courts of admiralty were created to prosecute violators and smugglers.
