Charles Watson-Wentworth was born on 13 May 1730, at Wentworth Woodhouse, near Rotherham, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. Charles was the fifth and only surviving son of Thomas Watson-Wentworth and his wife, Mary, the daughter of Daniel Finch, second earl of Nottingham and sixth earl of Winchilsea.
