    Wellington was born in Rome, Italy, the son of Gerald Wellesley, 7th Duke of Wellington, and Dorothy Violet, daughter of Robert Ashton. He was known by the courtesy title Marquess of Douro from 1943 when his father succeeded in the dukedom on the death of his nephew. He attended Eton before going up to New College, Oxford.

    Charles Wellesley est le fils aîné de Valerian Wellesley (1915–2014), 8e duc de Wellington, KG[2],[3]et de son épouse Diana Ruth McConnel (1922–2010). Le 3 février 1977, Charles Wellesley épouse la princesse Antonia de Prusse (née en 1955), fille du prince Frédéric de Prusse (1911–1966) et de son épouse Lady Brigid Guinness (1920–1995). Par son père, la jeune épouse est l'arrière-petite-fille de l’empereur Guillaume II d’Allemagne(1859–1941). De ce mariage naissent 5 enfants, dont l’aîné est titré comte de Mornington par courtoise. En 2014, à la mort de son père, il devient le 9e duc de Wellington et son héritier, le marquis Douro[4].

    En tant que Lord Douro, il est MEP du Parti conservateur. Il fut élu sous cette étiquette au Parlement européen dans la circonscription du Surrey (1979–1984) puis dans la circonscription du Surrey West (1984–1989)[5]. Élu pair représentant, il siège dans la Chambre des lords depuis 2015[6].

    Er wurde als Sohn des Arthur Valerian Wellesley, des damaligen Marquess of Douro und späteren 8. Dukes of Wellington, des ältesten Sohnes des 7. Dukes of Wellington, und der Ruth McConnel am 19. August 1945 in Windsor geboren. Von Geburt an trug er als ältester Sohn des Titelerben den Höflichkeitstitel Earl of Mornington, welcher einer der zahlreichen nachgeordneten Titel der Dukes of Wellington ist. Nachdem sein Vater den Duketitel geerbt hatte, führte er als Titelerbe (Heir apparent) den Höflichkeitstitel Marquess of Douro. 2010 wurde ihm mit Zustimmung der spanischen Krone auch der dem 1. Duke of Wellington 1812 erblich verliehene spanische Titel eines Herzogs (Duque) de Ciudad Rodrigo und die 1815 übertragene Würde eines Granden1. Klasse übertragen.

    Er besuchte Eton College und studierte danach am Christ Church College der Universität Oxford. Nach Abschluss des Studiums war er in zahlreichen bedeutenden britischen und internationalen Unternehmen tätig, unter anderen von 1975 bis 1984 als Vice-Chairman bei der Thames Valley Broadcasting, von 1985 bis 1989 in gleicher Funktion bei der Deltic Panamerica SA und von 1988 bis 1991 bei der Guinness Mahon Holdings. Gleichzeitig war er von 1977 bis 1980 Direktor der Antofagasta and Bolivia Company und von 1979 bis 1988 der Eucalyptus Pulp Mills. Es folgten Management-Tätigkeiten von 1983 bis 1995 bei der Transatlantic Holdings und von 1987 bis 1990 beim Continental und Industrial Trust. Weitere Aktivitäten folgten ab 2002 bei Sanofi, von 2003 bis 2011 bei Pernod-Ricard. Schließlich war er noch Chairman bei Deltic Securities Ltd.     Am 3. Februar 1977 heiratete er Antonia Prinzessin von Preußen, eine Tochter von Friedrich von Preußen (1911–1966) und Lady Brigid Guinness, in der Sankt Paul’s Church in London.     Er ist Mitglied der Conservative Party. Von 1978 bis 1979 saß er für die Tories im Basingstoke Borough Council (Gemeinderat). Dann wurde er 1979 zum Mitglied des Europäischen Parlaments gewählt, in dem er dann bis 1989 Mitglied blieb. 1999 wurde er schließlich noch Deputy Lieutenant der Grafschaft Hampshire. Am 16. September 2015 wurde bekanntgegeben, dass Wellesley eine Nachwahl für einen der Sitze im House of Lords, die den Erbadeligen zustehen, gewonnen hat. Er trat damit die Nachfolge von Arthur Lawson-Johnston, 3. Baron Lukean, der am 24. Juni 2015 freiwillig aus dem Oberhaus ausgeschieden war.

    Wellington was born in Rome, Italy, on 2 July 1915, the son of Lord Gerald Wellesley, future 7th Duke of Wellington, by his wife Dorothy Violet, daughter of Robert Ashton. He had one younger sister, the socialite Lady Elizabeth Clyde, whose son is the actor and musician Jeremy Clyde. At the time of Wellington's birth, his father Gerald was the third son of the 4th Duke of Wellington, with little prospect of succeeding to the family's estates and titles. Wellington was 28 when his first cousin Henry, the 6th Duke, was killed in action aged 31 while serving in Italy during the Second World War. Wellington's father then became the 7th Duke, and Wellington himself came to be known by the courtesy title Marquess of Douro.He was known by this moniker between 1943 and 1972, when he became 8th Duke upon the death of his father. Wellington attended Eton before going up to New College, Oxford.

    Wellington was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Territorial Army in 1936, and was commissioned with the same rank (on probation) in the British Army Reserve in 1939. In 1940, he was given a full commission as a second lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards Regiment, with the service number 68268. He served in the Second World War with the 1st Household Cavalry Regiment in the Middle East and Italy, during which time he was awarded the Military Cross, and promoted to the war substantive rank of captain. Following the war, the 1st Household Cavalry Regiment disbanded, and he returned to Royal Horse Guards, where he was promoted to lieutenant in 1946, and advanced to the rank of captain on later in that year. He received successive promotions to major in 1951, and to lieutenant colonel in 1954, rising to command of his regiment.     Wellington was involved in business as a Director of Massey Ferguson Holdings Ltd from 1967 to 1989 and of Motor Iberica SA (Spain) from 1967 to 1999. He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire on 18 April 1975.Through his final year, the Duke continued to conduct public engagements, most recently at the Order of the Garter investiture, 16 June 2014. Wellington died peacefully at his home, Stratfield Saye Estate, near Basingstoke, on New Year's Eve 2014, six months before the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, and seven months before his 100th birthday.

    Wellington was twice engaged to Lady Rose Paget, the daughter of Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey, who eventually married the Hon. John Francis McLaren. On 28 January 1944 he married Diana Ruth McConnel (1922–2010), only daughter of Major-General Douglas McConnel CB, CBE, of Knockdolian, Colmonell, Ayr, at St. George's Cathedral in Jerusalem. With Diana, he had five children: 1.     On 26 December 1941, as Second Lieutenant Wellesley, Wellesley was awarded the Military Cross"in recognition of distinguished services in the Middle East (including Egypt, East Africa, The Western Desert, The Sudan, Greece, Crete, Syria and Tobruk) during the period February, 1941, to July, 1941." Wellington was appointed a Member (Fourth Class) of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) on 15 March 1952. Membership (Fourth Class) was redesignated Lieutenant in 1984, thus adjusting his post-nominal letters to LVO. He was made an Officer (Military) of the Order of the British Empire(OBE) on 7 February 1958 "in recognition of distinguished services in Cyprus for the period 1st July to 31st December, 1957".
