Charlotte Buff was born on January 11, 1753 in Wetzlar. The young Goethe had fallen in love with Charlotte Buff. She was his model for the character of Lotte in his novel „The Sorrows of Young Werther“. However, Charlotte Buff married the later Hanoverian Hofrat Johann Christian Kestner.
