Cherubina de Gabriak (1909), a literary mask of the poet Elizaveta Dmitrieva (1887-1928), is now more famous for her story of masquerade, seduction, and scandal than for her poetry.
This paper will examine what the invented persona of Cherubina de Gabriac and the poems associated with it reveal about the fascination of exotic Western European Catholicism for Dmitrieva and other figures of the early twentieth century Russian literary scene.
