His father Christian Friedrich von Blücher (1696–1761), was a retired army captain, and his family belonged to the nobility and had been landowners in northern Germany since at least the 13th century. His mother was Dorothea Maria von Zülow (1702–1769), who also belonged to an old noble family from Mecklenburg.

Son of Christian Friedrich von Blücher and Dorothea Maria von Zülow. He soon joined the Prussian Army, and rose to a become a distinguished general. He lead 6th Coalition armies against Napoleon in 1813 and 1814. Blücher also beat Napoleon at The battle of Waterloo 1 year later. He died in 1819.
