General who gained fame during the conquest of Algeria; took part in the siege of Alger (1830) and of Constantine (1837, as a Lieutenant Colonel commanding the Zouaves); became maréchal-de-camp by 1840; general of division in 1843; acted temporarily as governor-general of Algeria and captured Abd-el-Kader in 1847.
