Claude Lorrain ( French: [klod lɔ.ʁɛ̃]; born Claude Gellée [ʒəle], called le Lorrain in French; traditionally just Claude in English; c. 1600 – 23 November 1682) was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher of the Baroque era.

Claude Lorrain (born 1600, Chamagne, France—died Nov. 23, 1682, Rome [Italy]) was a French artist best known for, and one of the greatest masters of, ideal landscape painting, an art form that seeks to present a view of nature more beautiful and harmonious than nature itself.
Claude de Lorraine, Duke of Guise (20 October 1496 – 12 April 1550) was a French aristocrat and general. He became the first Duke of Guise in 1528. He was a highly effective general for the French crown. His children and grandchildren were to lead the Catholic party in the French Wars of Religion .

Claude emerged as an independent artist in the late 1620s. His earliest dated canvas is a pastoral subject painted in 1629 (Philadelphia Museum) and among his first prints is The Storm, from 1630. His reputation grew steadily and by 1636 he had very important patrons, including Pope Urban VIII and King Philip IV of Spain.
