Colin Hanks kam 1977 als ältester Sohn des Schauspielers Tom Hanks und dessen erster Frau Samantha Lewes (geborene Dillingham) zur Welt. Dieser Ehe entstammt auch seine Schwester, Elizabeth (* 1982).
