He had first succeeded his father Judicael Berengar, as count of Rennes and later became duke of Brittany following his attack on Nantes and the subsequent death of Alan, duke of Brittany.[1]

He was son of Duke Geoffrey I and Hawise of Normandy. Alan married Bertha of Blois and had at least two children: Conan II, his successor, and Hawise of Brittany, who married Hoel of Cornwall.
