Demetrius was a son of King Alexander I of Imereti (died 1389), who had broken away from the Kingdom of Georgia during Timur's invasions of that country in 1387. After his uncle, King George I , was killed in 1392, Demetrius was carried away by another uncle, Constantine , to seek refuge in the Caucasian mountains .
Constantine II continued his war to reunify Georgia and attempted to invade Imereti in 1485, but was defeated by Alexander and a nobleman from the Lortkipanidze family in the Battle of Chikhori. The Georgian king was forced to return to Kartli in 1486 when Sultan Ya'qub Beg began a series of military incursions into his domains.
