Charles II Gonzaga (22 October 1609 – 30 August 1631) was the son of Charles I, Duke of Mantua, and Catherine de Lorraine-Guise (also known as Catherine de Mayenne). He was the Duke of Nevers and Rethel, together with his father. In 1621, he succeeded his uncle Henri de Lorraine-Guise as Duke of Mayenne.
Her maternal grandparents were Charles I, Duke of Mantua and Montferrat and his French wife Catherine de Mayenne, daughter of Charles de Lorraine-Guise, Duke of Mayenne. She was the youngest of three daughters. Bénédicte was reared by Louise de La Fayette, a courtier-turned-nun known as Sister Louise-Angélique.
Charles married Catherine of Lorraine-Mayenne, [9] daughter of Charles of Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne [10] and Princess Henriette of Savoy. They had: Francis Gonzaga, Duke of Rethel (1606–1622) [1] Charles Gonzaga, Duke of Nevers, nominal co-ruler Duke of Mantua (1609 – 14 August 1631) and his heir.
Nine years older than Edward, she was a daughter of Carlo I, Duke of Mantua and Catherine de Lorraine-Guise-Mayenne. She had been raised in France, where her father held the dukedom of Nevers prior to inheriting the Italian duchy.
Anne Gonzaga (Anne Marie; 1616 – 6 July 1684) was an Italian French noblewoman and salonist.The youngest daughter of Charles Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua and Montferrat, and Catherine de Lorraine (herself daughter of Charles, Duke of Mayenne), Anne was "Princess Palatine" as the wife of Edward of the Palatinate, a grandson of King James I of England and uncle to King George I of Great Britain.
