Sometime before 1631 James married Elizabeth, 12-year-old daughter of Anne Stanley by her first marriage to Grey Brydges, 5th Baron Chandos of Sudeley. At his trial, it emerged that Mervyn Tuchet had forced his young daughter-in-law to commit adultery with her mother's lover.
