The principality was captured by the forces of King Louis XIV of France under François Adhémar de Monteil, Count of Grignan , in the Franco-Dutch War in 1672, and again in August 1682.

Around 1708 the French architect Daniel Marot designed the Oranjewoud estate in classical baroque style, but in the end only two wings were realised. Also a huge formal garden was developed, of which the base is still visible today.
