Louis IX was a son of Louis VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, and Charlotte of Hanau-Lichtenberg and Müntzenberg . He was born in Darmstadt on 15 December 1719. On 12 August 1741, Louis married Caroline, daughter of Christian III, Duke of Zweibrücken. They had three sons and five daughters, including:

Carlota de Hanau-Lichtenberg (en alemany Charlotte, Gräfin von Hanau-Lichtenberg) va néixer a Bouxwiller (Alsàcia) el 2 de maig de 1700 i va morir a Darmstadt l'1 de juliol de 1726. Era l'única filla supervivent dels darrers comtes de Hanau, Joan Reinhard III de Hanau-Lichtenberg (1665-1736) i Dorotea Frederica de Brandenburg-Ansbach (1676-1731).
