Via this marriage, Louis is an ancestor of Felipe VI of Spain, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Philip's son Charles III of the United Kingdom. Pauline Therese Luise (4 September 1800 – 10 March 1873); married in 1820 her first cousin, William I of Württemberg.

In Munich, on 26 December 1833, he married Princess Mathilde Caroline of Bavaria, eldest daughter of Ludwig I of Bavaria. The marriage produced no children. Princess Mathilde Caroline died in 1862, and in 1868 the Grand Duke remarried, morganatically, to Magdalene Appelwho was created Baroness of Hochstädten.
