The town was the seat of the Counts of Celje from 1341 to 1456, with princely status from 1436. It acquired market-town status in the first half of the 14th century and town privileges from Count Frederick II on 11 April 1451.

The Counts of Cilli or Celje represent the most important medieval aristocratic and ruling house with roots and territory in present-day Slovenia. When the house died out its head held the rank of prince of the Holy Roman Empire and many other titles in territories of present-day Central Europe.

Their dynasty rose in late medieval times, and at their peak they accumulated property in Slovenia, Croatia, and Hungary, owning more than 20 castles, including Celje Castle where they lived for over a century.

The Celje Castle was built by the Counts of Heunberg in the second half of the 12th century. Then, the Lords of Sanneck (1333) who quickly climbed the ranks of the European elite, inherited the castle. They were elevated to the rank of the Counts of Celje soon after their move to Celje.
