Even the title — “Cruel Shoes” — is an intriguing turn of phrase. The shoes themselves aren’t really cruel — yet that’s the best description of them.

I’ve owned a tattered hardcover of this book since the mid-’80s, when, much like these guys , I was an adolescent Steve Martin fanatic.
