Curzio Malaparte was born Kurt Suckert in Prato in 1898. His father was German and his mother Italian. He fought in the First World War, where he was a victim of a mustard gas attack. After the War he took up journalism. He became enamoured of Fascism and published various pro-Fascist magazines.
