The band wished to develop their own sound rather than being regarded as a reformed Lynyrd Skynyrd, and toward that objective they hired a female lead vocalist, Dale Krantz, who later married Rossington.

Along with his wife, Dale Krantz-Rossington, he then formed The Rossington Band, which released two albums in 1986 and 1988. Until his death in 2023, Rossington still played with Lynyrd Skynyrd. With the death of bassist Larry Junstrom in 2019, he became the last surviving original member of the band.
