Born in Oak Park, Illinois, United States, [1] Tough was a friend of Bud Freeman, who was part of a group of musicians known as the Austin High School Gang in Chicago. [1] .
Dave Tough, a swinging drummer with a fine sense of musical quality, was a significant member of the group. He travelled to Europe in the '20s and also spent time in New York City making records with Eddie Condon, Red Nichols and others.

The inimitable Dave Tough controlled every band in which he worked with near-perfect timekeeping and his own distinct, buoyant style. Very much influenced by Baby Dodds, his primary concerns were musicality, maintaining an unwavering pulsation, and integrating the ensemble performance.
