David Bowes-Lyon memorial in All Saints, Saint Paul's Walden, Hertfordshire During World War II , Bowes-Lyon was a member of the secret propaganda department Political Warfare Executive . He was High Sheriff of Hertfordshire in 1950 and Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire from 1 July 1952  until his death.

Born in Westminster, David Ogilvy was educated at Eton and served in the Scots Guards during the Second World War. In 1946, he was appointed ADC to the C-in-C and High Commissioner to Austria. He remained in the army until 1950, when he left to attend the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, to learn more about estate management.

Rosemary Luisa Bowes-Lyon (18 July 1915 – 18 January 1989) married Edward Wilfred George Joicey-Cecil (14 January 1912 – 6 October 1985) on 28 April 1945.
