David Hilbert, matematikawan Jerman yang dikenal dengan karya-karyanya dalam teori himpunan, mengartikan aritmatika sebagai ilmu yang mempelajari tentang hubungan-hubungan matematika yang terdapat pada bilangan serta sistem aksioma yang digunakan untuk membangun aritmatika.
