Ministry of Defence (MoD) Formed in Apr 1997 as a Joint Services helicopter flying training service, under the Private Finance Initiative. Civilian contractors run a fleet of civilian owned, military registered (COMAR) training airframes under contract to MoD. Covers basic single engine to advanced multi-engine & SAR training.
The Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury, a Royal Air Force station near Shrewsbury, England, trains aircrew from all three of the Armed Forces. Low Flying Area 9 (LFA 9), covering all of Shropshire and the borders of adjacent counties, is a dedicated helicopter training area for military helicopters. A map of Low Flying Area 9 Intensive low-level helicopter activity, often down to ground level, takes place within the area between Monday to Friday, 0830 hours until 1730 hours with night flying occurring at periodic intervals.
The Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) organisation announced, in September 2014, that six companies had been invited to bid on the new Rotary Wing Training Programme (RWTP) that will replace the old Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS) out-sourcing contract, in place since 1997.
As well as gaining flying skills helicopter pupils also take survival and leadership courses. All helicopter training is carried out at the Defence Helicopter Flying School, RAF Shawbury, which provides instruction for pupils from all three Services using the the Bell Griffin HT1 and Eurocopter Squirrel HT1.
