When Richard Cromwell was born on 4 October 1626, in Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire, England, his father, Oliver Cromwell Lord Protector of England, was 27 and his mother, Elizabeth Bourchier, was 28. After long negotiations, in May 1649 he married Dorothy, daughter of Richard Maijor, a Hampshire gentleman who had supported the parliamentary cause financially and administratively. Richard and his new wife lived with his in-laws at their seat at Hursley, not far from Winchester, and Richard became a Hampshire country gentleman, serving with his father-in-law as a JP for the county.
Richard married Dorothy Maijor in 1649. She was the daughter of Richard Maijor, Esq. of Hursley (Hampshire). Following the marriage, the couple stayed at Dorothy’s father’s Hursley estate. Richard became a “Justice of the Peace” for Hampshire and was part of various county committees.
