Driving Miss Daisy, American film, released in 1989, that was adapted by Alfred Uhry from his play of the same name and that starred Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy. The movie won four Academy Awards , including that for best picture, as well as three Golden Globe Awards , including that for best comedy or musical.
An elderly Jewish widow living in Atlanta can no longer drive. Her son insists she allow him to hire a driver, which in the 1950s meant a black man. She resists any change in her life but, Hoke, the driver is hired by her son. She refuses to allow him to drive her anywhere at first, but Hoke slowly wins her over with his native good graces.
In all, Driving Miss Daisy was nominated for nine awards but most of the talk that year was about the lack of one nomination. Director Bruce Beresford, a member of the Australian "New Wave" directors, was in good company with Dead Poets Society's Peter Weir and first gained acclaim with Breaker Morant (1980), an unflinching account of a military murder trial during the Boer War.
