Dudo of Laurenburg Nassau Castle , located in Nassau , Rhineland-Palatinate , Germany , was the original seat of the House of Nassau . The ruins of the castle are situated on a rock outcropping about 120 m (390 ft) above the Lahn River.
Dudo built the castle of Laurenburg around 1090. In 1117, Dudo donated land to Schaffhausen Abbey for construction of a monastery in Lipporn. This monastery, built under Dudo's son Rupert I in 1126, was the Benedictine Schönau Abbey. From 1141 until her death in 1164, the abbey would be the home of St. Elizabeth of Schönau. Count Dudo-Henry of Laurenburg (c. 1060 – c. 1123) (German: Dudo von Laurenburg; Latin: Tuto de Lurinburg) is considered the founder of the House of Nassau. Dudo was a son of Rupert (German: Ruprecht), the Archbishop of Mainz's Vogt in Siegerland.

Dudo, or Dudon, was a Picard historian, and dean of Saint-Quentin, where he was born the 960s. He was an erudite scholar and he likely acquired his education in Liège or perhaps Laon . [2] By 987, Dudo had become a canon at St Quentin, the abbacy of which was held by the counts of Vermandois .
