17 de ago. de 2020 · Swimmer Duke Kahanamoku of Hawaii made his first Olympic appearance in 1912. Competing in the 100m freestyle, he equalled the world record in a qualifying heat. In the final, he was so far ahead that at the halfway point that he was able to look back and survey the field. Despite this pause, he won by two metres.
Born in Honolulu on August 24th, First of nine children of Duke Halapu and Julia Paoa Kahanamoku. His father was named by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop in honor of the arrival of England’s Duke of Edinburgh in 1869. Duke was also named for his father so his family called him by his middle name – “Paoa”.

Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku ( Honolulu ( Hawaï ), 24 augustus 1890 – aldaar, 22 januari 1968) groeide aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw uit tot een vermaard zwemmer, die gedurende zijn bijna twintig jaar durende sportcarrière drie gouden olympische medailles won.
