Shepard studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1897-1902. While at the RA Schools he met another gifted student, Florence Eleanor Chaplin (1876–1927). In 1904 they married; in 1907 their son Graham Shepard was born and in 1909 their daughter Mary Shepard, who was to marry E. V. Knox (1881-1971) who was editor of Punch from 1932-49.

Shepard is inevitably best known for, and defined by, his iconic illustrations for the children’s books The Wind in the Willows and Winnie-the-Pooh, but he had many more artistic strings to his bow, as cartoonist, magazine and periodical illustrator, drawer of book jackets and covers, and author.
E. H. Shepard was a British children's book illustrator and cartoonist. Between 1907 and 1953, he contributed political cartoons and occasional comics to Punch magazine. He was particularly renowned for his skills in portraying anthropomorphic animals in rustic forest settings.
