Se le atribuye el mérito de ser un innovador del vocalese, un estilo musical en el que las letras se ajustan a una composición instrumental o a un solo. El propio Jefferson afirma que su principal influencia fue Leo Watson.

This set at Jazz Showcase was one of Eddie's last concerts, he was shot and killed after his next set at Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit on May 8, 1979 at age 60.
