The telescope was originally installed at Iso-Heikkilä Observatory on the outskirts of the city of Turku, Finland. When the city grew, together with its lights, the telescope was moved in 1950s to a darker location at Kevola Observatory , some 35 km east of Turku.
Iso-Heikkilä Observatory. An observatory desinged and built by professor Väisälä was finished in Iso-Heikkilä, Turku, in autumn 1937. Before, astronomical observations had been made at an observatory of Ursa of Turku, a local association of amateur astronomers.
1947 Iso-Heikkilä, provisional designation 1935 EA, is a carbonaceous Eos asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, approximately 30 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 4 March 1935, by Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at Turku Observatory in Southwest Finland.
Tuorla Observatory was established on April 29, 1952 by professor Yrjö Väisälä. [2] [3] A new observatory was needed because the old Iso-Heikkilä Observatory close to the centre of Turku started suffering from heavy light pollution from the nearby city and especially the industrial areas to the south of the observatory.
