Grand-Ducal Burial Vault. Standing next to the Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral, the Grand-Ducal Burial Vault is the final resting place for 13 junior members of the Romanov family, as well as for Grand-Duke Vladimir Kirillovich, who was head of the Russian Imperial Family in exile until he died in 1992.
The Grand Ducal Mausoleum, next to the cathedral, was built in 1896 to hold the tombs of the lesser Romanovs, as well as the Beauharnais family (Dukes of Leuchtenberg), who had married into the Romanov family. Grand Ducal Mausoleum at the Peter and Paul Fortress.
The Ducal Vault – a masterpiece of Classical period architecture in Thuringia – was built at the behest of Grand Duke Carl August between 1823 and 1828 on the grounds of the Historic Cemetery, established in 1818. Its architect was Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray.
