21 de mar. de 2024 · Edward Douglass White, Jr. Edward Douglass White lived between 1844 and 1921, and was a renowned politician, senator, attorney and U.S. Supreme Court Justice. He played a role in several of the most significant issues of his lifetime, ranging from African American rights following the Civil War to labor rights in the early 1900s.
This National Historic Landmark, situated on the banks of scenic Bayou Lafourche near Thibodaux, was the residence of two of Louisiana’s foremost political figures: Edward Douglas White, who was governor from 1835 to 1839, and his son, Edward Douglass White, who was appointed to the United States Supreme Court in 1894 and served as chief justice from 1910 to 1921.
Edward Douglass White (March 3, 1795 – April 18, 1847) was tenth Governor of Louisiana and a member of the United States House of Representatives. He served five non-consecutive terms in Congress, as an adherent of Henry Clay of Kentucky and the Whig Party .

Louisiana. Edward Douglass White was the ninth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated to the court by President Grover Cleveland on February 19, 1894. Sixteen years later, President William Howard Taft nominated White as Chief Justice. White served in this position from 1910 until his death on May 19, 1921.
He was awarded an honorary degree by Princeton University in 1912. White died in Washington, D.C., on May 19, 1921. This statue of Edward Douglass White was given to the National Statuary Hall Collection by Louisiana in 1955. White served in the U.S. Senate from 1890-1894 and on the Supreme Court from 1894 until his death in 1921.
