The PUWP leadership reassessed the political situation in the country at the Politburo meeting of 1 and 2 October 1956, shortly after the First Secretary, Edward Ochab,5 returned from a visit to China.6 The agenda of this meeting included concerns about Gomulka’s views on the developing crisis.
