Edwin S. Porter nació el 21 de abril de 1869 en Scozia, Italia. Emigró a América en 1895 y trabajó con el Vitascope pasando por varios oficios antes de trabajar como proyeccionista . Lanzó un nuevo proyector y alrededor de 1900, después que un incendio le dejara totalmente arruinado, comienza a realizar películas para Edison .
