Thomas Wentworth, 2nd Baron Wentworth (1525 – 13 January 1584) was an English peer, courtier, administrator and military commander during the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. [1] His reputation suffered through the surrender of Calais in 1558, which occurred under his command. [2]
William Wentworth married Lord Burghley’s second daughter, Elizabeth Cecil (1564-/1583), on 26 February 1582 (see CP 140/13). He died at Lord Burghley’s estate of Theobalds only a few months later, on 7 November 1582. As Lord Wentworth’s letter below indicates, at the time of her husband’s death, Elizabeth Cecil Wentworth was pregnant.
Elizabeth Cecil (born 1 July 1564), who married William Wentworth of Nettlestead (c. 1555–1582), eldest son of Thomas Wentworth, 2nd Baron Wentworth. Cecil's descendants include the Marquesses of Exeter, descended from his elder son Thomas; and the Marquesses of Salisbury, descended from his younger son Robert.
